There are plenty of orchids which appear…. (racing helmet)

There are plenty of orchids which appear so dark to the eye that they are considered to practically deserve to be labeled as black, but as of yet no true black orchids have ever been found.

Notes from Hawaii - Waimea Canyon

The Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park

are located on the western side of Kaui

and offers great hiking with spectacular views.

You can start the day with breakfast at the

Kalapaki Beach Hut, located near Nawiliwili

Harbor in Lihue and a short walk from the

Kaui Marriott.

The Beach Hut Hut is local place that does not

look like much from the outside, but you find

both standard breakfast items like pancakes and

local items like the Local Moco (rice with a hamburger,

egg, and gravy over the top of it)

It will take you just over an hour to reach Waimea

Canyon and you might find some fog or a little rain

once you reach it.

The Canyon is a spectacular gorge that is hard to

describe with several lookouts that allow you to

view the great vistas.

The road along the canyon will take you to Kokee

State Park with the native birds, vegetation, and

the scenic views of the cliffs that are the main attractions.

You find a museum, gift shop and a restaurant at the

Kokee park headquarters.

The Kokee Lodge is the restaurant and gift shop that

offers chili and BBQ Pork among with a coconut pie

for dessert.

Kokee State Park offers many hiking trails and you

can buy a map at the museum.

A stop in Waimea for shave ice at JoJo’s Clubhouse

is a must stop on the way out of the Canyon.

Jojo’s has over sixty flavors and you can order a scoop

of ice cream with it

The Gay & Robinson sugar plantation is one of the last

ones in Hawaii and you can take a tour of it.

The plantation is located in Kaumakani on the highway

to Hanapepe and it is a expensive tour.

The next suggested stop is in Hanapepe at the Kaui Kookie

factory outlet for the famous shortbread cookies that

come in a variety of flavors at great prices.

(You can sample all of the flavors!)

You find a number of historical sites including the Russian

Fort Elizabeth near Waimea on the drive from Waimea

Canyon.

The following is a view from Kokee State Park of the

Waimea Canyon.

Gone to Hawaii

Traveling Ed is hitting the road and visiting the Hawaiian islands

of Kaui and the Big Island of Hawaii.

The Big Island is the first stop with four nights at the Hapuna Beach

Prince Hotel and two nights at the Volcano House.

The trip to the Big Island will take me to some areas that are are

off the tourist path such as North Kohala and the towns of

Kapaau,Hawai, and Kawaihae.

A two day stay at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will

allow time to explore many of the great hiking trails and

sites that have made this a world class destination.

The local food is not to be missed at such places as Cafe 101

in Hilo with local home style cooking, Aloha Angel Cafe in

Kainaliu (south of Kailua-Kona) for breakfast, and Frisk

Scandinavian Shaved Ice in Kaiula Kona for a good flavor

selection and price of this must visit place.

Kaui is the next stop with four nights at the new Resortquest

Kaui Beach at Makaiwa.

A visit to the rugged north shore will include a visit to the

Kiauea Point Lighthouse, the Waikapalae wet caves, and a

hike along the coast on the Kalalau Trail.

The Waimea Canyon and the Kokee State Park will offer

dramatic sights and great hiking trails on the west side of the

island.

Great local food can be found at the Kountry Kitchen in

Kapaa (east side) for breakfast, Hamura’s Saimin Stand

in Lihue for bowls of great noodles, and Mark’s Place in

Lihue for local style mixed plate lunch.

These activities and more will make a great trip!

Romantic Capitals of Central Europe

Are you looking for a romantic honeymoon with

ancient cobbled passageways, Gothic spires and

great food?

Prague,Vienna, and Budapest are three great cities

that offer romantic charm and unique experiences.

You can look at the Europe specials on the

Big Day website if you want to visit these cities.

Prague is one of Europes most beautiful cities, as well as

being one of its best preserved capitals. Its architectural excellence

can be seen everywhere from the Prague castle to the Charles Bridge

with its statues of monarchs and saints medieval architecture to

Wenceslas Square in the heart of the city.

And with its compact city center, it is very accessible.

This romantic city has kept its eastern European charm and

vibrant culture while still becoming a modern-thinking, progressive

capital.

Traditional Czech foods include dumplings, roast pork and

apple strudel.

The Jalta is a luxury hotel located on Wenceslas Square and

is a great locaton for exploring the historical sites of Prague.

The following photo shows a room at the Jalta Hotel Prague.

Vienna, with its long history, captivates visitors with its cosmopolitan

 ambience and its spectacular architecture.

Proud of its cultural heritage, Vienna is home to year-round festivals

of music, theater and cuisine. Most of its major attractions are conveniently

located the on Ringstrasse. Participate in lifestyle by exploring its many

 Heurigen (wine taverns) and coffeehouses.

Visit the magnificent Schnbrunn Palace, just outside city.

Vienna and its surroundings are sure to entertain and delight visitors.

Vienna is famous for its Wiener Schnitzel, coffee, cakes and

tortes.

The Tyrol is a luxury boutique hotel and is located near all

of the major sites including the Hofburg Palace and the

Ringstrasse.

The following photo shows a room at the Tyrol Hotel Vienna.

Budapest is a city of contrasts, where the differences between

east and west are still visible, divided by the Danube river.

The cosmopolitan, ritzy section of Buda looks down from its

hills on the more chaotic, scruffy side of Pest.

These contrasts give Budapest much of its character and charm.

Since the end of the Cold War, the city has been able to truly

celebrate its uniqueness, while retaining its genuine hospitality.

You should try some of the traditional spicy Hungarian food such

as the meat stews and goulashs.

The K & K Opera is a first class hotel located near the

Opera House and close to shopping and coffee houses.

The following photo shows a room at  the K & K Opera.
